Last night I was watching Game 6 of the NBA finals (along with 25 million of you folks) and it was tough to watch. The Golden State Warriors were struggling throughout the game and I was surprised to see even their star player Stephen Curry not at his usual peak self. Several bad calls were called on the Warriors that lead to the Cleveland Cavaliers winning the game. Yeah the Warriors didn’t play well but that’s not what had everyone buzzing after the game.
It was in the fourth quarter where some major dramaaaa took place. Stephen was fouled out and ejected for arguing the call and throwing his mouthpiece, which ended up hitting the son of one of the Cavaliers’ minority owners sitting court-side. Stephen later apologized to the man and shook his hand and it did seem, by all accounts, an accident.
I was really shocked to see Stephen ejected from the game. He isn’t known to be a sore loser or to have a really bad temper. The man’s the MVP of the league for goodness sake! When asked about what happened, here is what Stephen had to say. “I’ve never been ejected before. It was a weird feeling…it was just frustration and kind of hilarious the way that the last two fouls and me blowing up kind of unfolded, some of the things that were said out there.†When asked about throwing his mouthpiece, he told media that he had thrown his mouthpiece in frustration before and usually aims for the scorer’s table. “I was off-aim,†he explained, confirming he never meant to hit anyone sitting in the crowd.
But it wasn’t just Stephen that had people talking—his wife’s reaction also got noticed. Stephen’s wife Ayesha Curry took to Twitter right away to express her anger. She wrote, “I’ve lost all respect sorry this is absolutely rigged for money…or ratings in not sure which. I won’t be silent. Just saw it live sry.†The tweet has since been deleted and Ayesha send out another tweet saying it was “tweeted in the heat of the moment because the call was uncalled for.â€
Some of the tweets sent out by Ayesha including the now deleted tweet.
It was a tough night for the Curry family as she revealed she was upset about another piece of drama that took place that night. “Police racial profiled my father and told him to remove his credentials and tried to arrest him. It’s been a long night for me. I apologize,†she tweeted. “I’m okay that we lost…I just can’t take people coming at my family for absolutely no reason. Something I don’t understand or stand for.â€
After the game, Stephen confirmed to the media that his father-in-law was mistaken for a known con artist who has created fake credentials in the past to get into these types of high profile events. According to Stephen after the police mistook his father-in-law as the con artist, they threatened to arrest him before they checked out his credentials. “It’s kind of been an emotional and tough night all the way around.â€
Ayesha also tweeted that she was late getting to the game because the bus carrying her and the other Warriors’ family members was delayed in getting to the arena. She managed to make it to her seat just before tip-off but the stress of potentially missing the beginning of the game had her night start off on the wrong foot.
Here’s my take on the story. I would have done the exact same thing as Ayesha. While there have been some critics saying she shouldn’t have posted anything online about what happened, I don’t agree. She is standing up for her man! I would do the same thing if I was at the game and watching my man get ejected out of such an important game. If I felt like my man was being pushed around or being treated unfairly, I would stand up for him and defend my family. So I get it Ayesha! You were having a tough night and you weren’t going to let anyone push your husband, father, or anyone else in your family around! We should all be protective of our own families and stand up for them. That’s what you do for family! Just because she is Stephen’s wife, doesn’t mean she can’t be her own person and have her own opinion. People are so quick to criticize her and then compare her to other NBA wives and it really needs to stop. It’s one thing to go after the players and it’s another thing to go after their families. I’ve seen several terrible memes online featuring Ayesha and her children, even tweets insulting her three year old daughter Riley and it’s like come on guys! You may not like her husband or his team but there’s no need to go after her and her kids! Geez!
Hopefully the drama for the Curry family is over with and they can focus on Game 7 which takes place this Sunday…it’s going to be an interesting game!
